Google Maps Lets Users Post Reviews With Nicknames
  • Jan 1, 2026

Google Maps has introduced a new option that allows users to publish business reviews using a custom nickname instead of their real name. This update is being rolled out worldwide across Android, iOS, and desktop platforms.

With this change, reviewers can choose a display name and profile image that appear publicly, rather than showing their actual Google Account name. The update applies to all visible contributions across Google Maps and Google Search.

  • Reviews remain connected to the user’s Google Account behind the scenes
  • Existing spam detection and review moderation systems continue to function as before

What’s New in This Update

According to Google’s official help documentation, users can now set a separate posting identity within their Maps or Google profile. Once enabled, this identity is shown on reviews, photos, videos, and Q&A submissions across Maps.

The feature also works on older content. If a user changes their nickname later, previous reviews and contributions automatically update to reflect the new display name.

Local SEO firm Whitespark was among the first to analyze the rollout, calling it one of the most meaningful updates to Google’s review system in recent years.

While users have historically created Google accounts with alternate names, this is the first time Google has formally introduced and documented a dedicated public-facing review identity separate from the main account name.

Impact on Review Spam and Moderation

Google has confirmed that its current review safeguards remain unchanged. Even when a nickname is used, each review is still linked to the account’s history and activity.

Businesses can continue to flag reviews that appear to violate Google’s policies. Whitespark describes this system as pseudonymous rather than anonymous—the public name may change, but Google still has full visibility into the reviewer’s identity and contribution record.

Why This Update Is Important

As this feature becomes more widely adopted, review sections are likely to include more nicknames and avatar-style profile images.

Whitespark points out that this change may be especially impactful for industries such as healthcare, legal services, and financial services, where customers are often reluctant to leave public reviews using their real names. The option to use a nickname could encourage more users to share feedback in these privacy-sensitive sectors.

Businesses operating in these categories may want to revise their review request messages to inform customers that posting under a nickname is now possible.

What to Expect Next

The nickname feature is already live or gradually rolling out for most users. However, some local SEO professionals—including Joy Hawkins—have noted that the option does not yet appear in all accounts, suggesting a phased global rollout.
